AST SpaceMobile announces Blacklift rocket, targets commercial launches in late 2028

AST SpaceMobile said it is developing Blacklift, a medium-lift rocket, with commercial launches planned from late 2028.

AST SpaceMobile announced on 6 November that it is developing a medium-lift rocket named Blacklift. The rocket is designed to lift 20 metric tons to low-Earth orbit, and the company said commercial launches would start in late 2028.

AST SpaceMobile is a Texas-based, publicly traded company building very large satellites for direct-to-cell communications. Ars Technica reported that the company has had trouble finding rides to space.

"The Blacklift rocket is the springboard to significantly expand our total addressable market," said founder, chairman and CEO Abel Avellan in a news release. He said it would give the company regular unconstrained access to orbit.
