BAE Systems wins Space Force contract for space data layer RF terminals

BAE Systems will build software-defined radio terminals for a Space Force space-based data layer, covering LEO to GEO.

The US Space Force Space Systems Command has awarded BAE Systems a contract to build radio frequency terminals for a space-based data layer. BAE announced the award on 15 October. It did not specify the programme.

BAE said the system will feature military-grade security and support operations from low Earth orbit to geosynchronous orbit. The company plans to supply a solution based on its family of software-defined radios, which are designed to deal with jamming, electromagnetic interference and space radiation.

BAE plans to use an application programming interface to enable precise pointing between payloads. Joe Dziezynski, BAE Systems Space Systems product line director, said the company's resilient design and established manufacturing capacity will enable rapid deployment and scalable production.
