Google satellite returns first Gemma 4 response from orbit

Google booted its satellite's Tensor Processing Units, and the on-board Gemma 4 model wrote a haiku in orbit.

Google's satellite carrying AI chips has generated its first response from space. In a blog post, Google said it booted up the satellite's Tensor Processing Units, allowing the on-board Gemma 4 model to answer a prompt to write a haiku about being in space.

Google said it also tried other space-themed limericks and telemetry prompts. The satellite is part of Project Suncatcher, an experimental initiative that could eventually put AI data centres in space. Google launched it into orbit earlier this month.

Google said the next step is a series of tests to evaluate how the TPUs perform under thermal stress and radiation exposure in orbit. Its next milestone is twin interconnected satellites in 2027.
