Globalstar asks FCC to examine Rocket Lab supplier ties after Iridium deal

Globalstar told the FCC that Rocket Lab's supplier role could favour Iridium once Rocket Lab acquires its rival.

Globalstar has asked the FCC to look closely at how its relationship with supplier Rocket Lab could be affected after Rocket Lab acquires Iridium, a direct competitor to Globalstar.

In a filing in the FCC's review of the acquisition, Globalstar detailed what it called repeated attempts by Iridium to "capture" its licensed mobile satellite service spectrum through regulatory filings. It also raised questions about the competitive implications of the deal.

Rocket Lab built the satellite buses as a subcontractor to MDA Space for Globalstar's satellite network refresh. Globalstar said Rocket Lab also supplies flight and ground software for these satellites and developed its satellite operations control centre.

"Today, Rocket Lab's interests align with Globalstar's success; after it acquires Iridium, however, that same supplier relationship will give Rocket Lab both the incentive and the means to advantage Iridium at a competitor's expense," Globalstar stated. Globalstar is set to be acquired by Amazon.
