JWST confirms Leviathan, a massive dusty galaxy in the early universe
JWST has confirmed Leviathan, a massive dust-rich galaxy whose stars are spread out, seen about 1.5 billion years after the Big Bang.
Astronomers using the James Webb Space Telescope have confirmed a massive, dust-rich galaxy called Leviathan. It is seen as it was when the universe was roughly 1.5 billion years old.
The galaxy has its stars spread out rather than concentrated. The finding challenges the idea that dusty giant galaxies become compact galaxies. A paper describing its stellar distribution was posted to the arXiv preprint server on 19 October.
