Researchers list 27 exoplanet targets for the Lazuli Space Telescope

Researchers have proposed 27 exoplanet targets for the coronagraph on the privately funded Lazuli Space Telescope.

New research proposes a list of 27 exoplanet targets for the Lazuli Space Telescope, billed as the world's first private space telescope. Some of the targets are very well known, including 55 Cancri d, described as a Jupiter analog.

The paper is by Logan Pearce of the University of Michigan and Ewan Douglas of the University of Arizona's Steward Observatory. It selects targets for Lazuli's ExtraSolar Coronagraph, which will image exoplanets using reflected starlight rather than their thermal emission.

The Lazuli Space Telescope, backed by Google's former CEO Eric Schmidt, will have a 3-metre mirror, larger than the 2.4-metre mirror on Hubble. It will feature three instruments: a wide-field optical imager, an integral field spectrograph, and the coronagraph. The telescope is scheduled to launch by 2029.
