NASA Science is changing how it competes and selects missions under a new framework called Competition Model 2.0 (CM 2.0). It will hold a virtual Science Town Hall from NASA Headquarters on 26 October to explain the model and answer questions.

In a letter to the science community, NASA said the current two-step process has taken years to move mission concepts through. It said the process has often come with contract management challenges, unpredictability and not enough funding.

NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman has directed the Science Mission Directorate to accelerate the delivery of science, cut the time and resources spent on long competitive processes, and focus funding on the highest-priority missions across every NASA Science division.

The letter said some changes will take time to implement. NASA will roll them out in stages and refine them with input from the community.
