FCC authorises Globalstar's C-3 constellation for direct-to-device service
The FCC has authorised Globalstar's 48-satellite C-3 constellation to provide direct-to-device service to smartphones.
The FCC has granted Globalstar authority to operate its third-generation C-3 constellation. The system will use mobile satellite services spectrum to provide direct-to-device service to smartphones. Globalstar announced the approval on 19 October.
The system includes 48 low-Earth orbit satellites, six on-orbit spares and 90 ground station antennas around the world. MDA Space is building the satellites. Globalstar filed for the constellation in February 2025 as a next-generation, higher-power system, after Apple invested to fund it.
Globalstar is going through a deal to be acquired by Amazon. Amazon plans to operate both the C-3 constellation and a new Amazon direct-to-device constellation of up to 5,105 satellites.
"Receiving this FCC authorization is a critical step forward for continuing to enhance the capabilities of our Low-Earth Orbit satellite constellations," said Globalstar CEO Paul Jacobs.
